Bilancia 2002 is made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Each of the varieties was hand harvested and the wines were hand plunged during fermentation. The wines were pressed at dryness and underwent Malolactic fermentation in barrel. The individual wines were maintained separately during the two years in predominantly French oak, approximately 40% new. During the time in barrel the wines were regularly racked and the final blend was completed just prior to bottling.
The river stones of the Gimblett Gravels and the warmth of the 2002 vintage have perfectly ripened these Bordeaux varieties. The Merlot provides richness of fruit while Cabernet franc contributes to the structure. Our aim with blends like this is to produce a complex wine that has been built from great varietal wines.
The balance between fruit and tannins suggests this wine will begin to drink well from early 2005 onwards.
